October 12 Events Update Extravaganza

Books & Co, Café Voltaire and Art Space have some fantastic stuff coming up in the next couple of weeks.

Tickets are going fast for Western Roots music legends Valdy & Gary Fjellgaard’s magnificent show this Thursday, October 13!  Come out and see two of Canada’s best loved folk and country artists combined for a wonderful night of music.  Valdy & Gary Fjellgaard will be playing Art Space starting at 8:00 pm on October 13.  Tickets are $25 and are still available!

IT’S BACK!  Café Voltaire is pleased to announce the return of our wildly successful Open Mic Night, Friday, October 14.  Hosted by the redoubtable Jeremy Stewart, this week’s open mic is the perfect chance for you to dust off that guitar, pull out the old accordion or show off your glockenspiel skills (did you know you can get glockenspiel lessons at B & B music? Just in case your glockenpielling is a little rusty).  If you’re not yet confident in your musical skills, but just want to enjoy a night of talent from some of the best musicians Prince George has to offer, bring in your tapping toes and your clapping hands and support those who take the stage.  As always, things kick off at 8:00 pm and are FREE.

SUNDAY, SUNDAY, SUNDAY!  Stan Chung (a former CNC instructor and longtime PG resident) will be in to talk about his wonderful collection of essays Global CitizenCanadian author Wayson Choy says “the writing is risk-taking, emotionally frank and unflinching, qualities not expected to appear, except rarely…” and this event is not to be missed!  Sunday, October 16 at 2:00pm!

And if that’s not enough, we’ve got a fantastic concert with Adrian Glynn on October 16th at 7:00 pm in Art Space! Vancouver based troubadour, Adrian Glynn is certain to delight and amaze with his unique, anything-goes blend of rough-hewn rock, dusty, Depression-era folk and blues.  Tickets are still available and only cost $10!

Local poet, GP Lainsbury, launches his latest collection Versions of North on Monday, October 17 at 7:00 pm in Café VoltaireVersions of North attempts to locate poetic consciousness in the drifting concept of north, using avant-garde techniques to reveal connections between disparate elements of signification. Lainsbury borrows from a wide variety of sources, filtering them through the grid of a disenchanted idealism, taking to heart the cyberpunk declaration that “information wants to be free.” Come out for a stimulating evening of poetry!

WAYNE JOHNSTON!  Serious, WAYNE JOHNSTON is coming to Prince George to talk about his new novel A World Elsewhere!  This is a big deal and we are ridiculously excited to have this award-winning, hugely popular and marvelously funny, Newfoundland author visit the store on Wednesday, October 18 at 7:00 pm!

But wait, that’s not all!  We’ve got tickets to some of the hottest concerts of the fall: Roy Forbes will be here on October 21st, Colin Linden as part of Coldsnap is here on October 30th and Alex Cuba (seriously, Alex Cuba) is going to be here on November 18th.

And don’t forget the special Navaz & Los Gringos show in Art Space on October 29 at 8:00 pm. All the way from Argentina to Iran, this show will blow you away with fantastic global music!  Tickets are only $15 ($10 for students) and available at Books & Co right now!

We’ve also got plans for a City Councilor Candidates forum on Arts Funding and Downtown Business Development, writing workshops, book clubs for kids and a Howling Halloween Party so stay tuned for future updates!

And remember, if you’ve got a club, group or organization that needs a place to meet, Café Voltaire has the perfect atmosphere!

That’s it for this week, folks!  Don’t forget to check us out on Facebook (we love your feedback), Twitter (140 characters or less), our blog and on our fantastic homepage!
