Books & Co wants you to call your mother…and to bring her to some of our wonderful May events

It’s almost Mother’s Day! We here at Books & Co, ArtSpace and Café Voltaire love Mother’s Day because we love our mothers (and other peoples’ mothers, we’re not picky).  And did you know that great Mother’s Day presents abound at Books & Co? We’ve got tickets to fantastic concerts, and books about everything your mother loves (well except you, unless you’ve written a biography in which case we’ve even got that).  And we’ve got a wealth of wonderful events you could take your mother to all month long at ArtSpace, Books & Co and Café Voltaire!

Moms love the CBC so make sure to come out TOMORROW: Thursday, May 10 because we’ve got the Prince George gathering for Reimagine CBC hosted by Richard deMontigny! The ReimagineCBC.ca local gatherings will bring supporters together in their communities to learn about the budget cuts, talk about the best ideas from the online forum, and share your thoughts about the future of the CBC. This event will help create a powerful citizens’ report that we’ll deliver to decision-makers.  So come out to ArtSpace at 7:00 pm and share your ideas about our National Broadcaster, the wonderful CBC!

Friday, May 11 we’ve got a real treat, literally, in Café Voltaire.  Adrienne Johnston, the author of No More Secrets: Recipes from Cow Bay Café will be in to sign copies of her wonderful cookbook from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm and you can sample some of the treats found in the book because our Café Voltaire specials will be following the marvelous recipes!  And after you get your copy signed…make  your mom some of the wonderful treats!

And our Friday Night Mics brings Ft St John’s own country songstress Kristy Howes! She’s climbing the country charts and we’re lucky to get her so early in her career! So come out for a top tapping good time on Friday, May 11 at 8:00 pmAs always, this event is free! So, if you’re on a budget, bring your Mom for a pre-Mother’s Day present.  She just wants to spend time with you, call your mother.

Hey Moms, did you know every Saturday morning at 10:00 am we’ve got a fantastic storytime?  Come in and browse (or have a coffee and a chat) while our booksters delight and amuse with the best in classic and contemporary children’s stories! You might even get a special Mother’s Day present made while you wait!

Saturday, March 12 at 10:00 am drop by Café Voltaire for a book signing with Rob Bryce! Rob has revised and updated his wildly popular Hiking in North Central BC.  This edition includes an interactive DVD and over 100 different hikes!  Come in, get your book signed and talk to Rob about where you and your mom should spend some quality outdoor time this summer!

It’s your last chance to take Mom to a Theatre Northwest Play! We’ve still got tickets to the last Theatre Northwest Play of the season, Brighton Beach Memoirs, which has been held over until May 12.  Come by soon before all of the good seats are taken on the night you want to go!

Moms love folk music, so why not take your mom to a fantastic folk concert on Mother’s Day?  Lauren Mann and the Fairly Odd Folk are back on Sunday, May 13 at 7:30 pm in ArtSpace! We could not be more excited to have this amazing group back!  Their last concert was a rocking good time and this one is sure to please!  And local favs Sparethelove will be making a special guest appearance. Tickets are a steal at $10 and are on sale NOW at Books & Co.

We’ve also got tickets for Coldsnap’s cool night of music in May featuring Red Moon Road!  Make sure to mark your calendar for Monday, May 14th because this is a concert you and your mom won’t want to miss!  Tickets are on sale now (only $20)!  This concert takes place in ArtSpace! (You could always give your mom tickets for Mother’s Day…just a hint)

And if your Mom is like my Mom then she’s very excited about the beginning of gardening season! So why not take her to the fantastic Gardening Q & A with local gardening expert Barbara Rayment! We’re launching Barb’s new book (so new it’s coming hot off the press that day) The Northern Gardener at 7:00 pm Wednesday, May 16 in ArtSpace.  There will be a slideshow of images from Darwin Paton, who supplied the photographs from the book, and a great chance to get all of your gardening conundrums sorted out before things get out of hand.

For the poetry loving moms out there, local favorite Gillian Wigmore is launching her new collection Dirt of Ages (available now from Books & Co) at The Twisted Cork on Thursday, May 17 at 7:30 pm.  Gillian’s new collection is, as Fred Stenson says, “place-literate, fully flexed, often suspenseful. When she writes of the life and death of northern people and northern rivers, you love and grieve.” So bring your mom to one of this season’s most anticipated poetry launches!

We’ve also got tickets to some fantastic upcoming concerts! The Super Saturated Sugar Strings will be in ArtSpace on Tuesday, May 22 at 8:00 pm (Tickets on $10) and Cod Gone Wild are back in ArtSpace on Saturday, June 2 at 8:00 pm (Tickets are $20 and worth every penny). So think about putting the gift of live music into that Mother’s Day card you made (you know, the one with your handprint…yep, that one).

That’s it for this week folks, for more information about upcoming events or just the cool things that happen here, you can find us on Facebook and Twitter and did you know we’ve got a blog?  Well we do, find out our thoughts on all things books related at booksandcompany.wordpress.com

We Love April and April Events at Books & Co

I love April.  April means (usually) no more snow, and the return of birds and bees and buds – I saw some pussy willow buds the other day, I love pussy willows – and it’s got loads of interesting days in it.  It’s National Poetry Month (check out our Facebook page for a featured poet, and our Twitter feed for a quote about poetry everyday) and April 10 was Siblings Day.  We had Easter this year, the fourth week (which starts on Sunday) is Arts and Culture week here in BC and April 22 is Earth Day.  We love April and we’ve tried to make that clear through the events at Café Voltaire, Books & Company and ArtSpace!

The Caledonia Ramblers are in ArtSpace on Friday, April 20th at 7:00 pm for their Spring Annual Meeting and a wonderful slideshow (starting at about 7:45)detailing Carolyn Ibis’s fantastic bicycle journey from Prince George to Vancouver via Jasper! “The Adventures of Squirrel and Bunny” details her trip from volunteering as a sweep on the Tour de Jasper to riding a fully self-supported tour to Chilliwack with fellow rider Jim, adventure was found around every corner!

Our Friday Night Mics are really fun this week!  We’ve got Dave Parsons & Joey Onley coming in to give us their fantastic musical stylings! Things kick off in Café Voltaire at 8:00 pm and as always, this event is free.

Did you know we’ve got a Spectacular Story Time Every Saturday Morning at 10:00 am! Our expert storytellers provide spice (and excellent scary, funny and weird voices) to classic and modern tales! So drop in with your youngsters and enjoy a coffee while they listen to stories and make crafts!

Cinema CNC is BACK and Books & Company has got tickets!  Saturday, April 21 at 7:00 pm and 9:30 pm is the breathtaking documentary, Pina, about choreography and artistic genius. Make sure to drop in and get your tickets right away for these two fantastic films! (As always, Cinema CNC is held in Rm. 1-306 on the CNC campus).

And on Sunday, April 22 at 3:00 pm come celebrate Earth Day! We’ve got a Special Story Time and Crafternoon planned!  Come out for stories, crafts and the chance to plant something you can take home for your own garden!

Tuesday, April 24 at 7:00 pm, Mike Nash will be in ArtSpace for an Outdoor Safety Presentation and to launch his new book Outdoor Safety and Survival! Come out and see Prince George’s back country, learn how to navigate it safely and talk to Mike about all of your outdoor safety concerns!
