July 13 – Upcoming Events Email!

Well.  It really is July, though you’d never actually know it.  Here are some fantastic events to keep your mind off of the Fall-like Summer we’ve been “enjoying!”

You’ve been waiting so patiently friends and finally that time is upon us!  Café Scientifique returns to Café Voltaire tonight, Wednesday July 13th at 7:30pm!  Entitled Educating the Next Generation of Physicians this free event, featuring Dr. David Snadden – Vice Provost of Medicine at UNBC and Regional Associate Dean of Northern BC at UBC – will be an open forum informing you of the direction the UBC Faculty of Medicine would like to travel and, in turn, asking you to share your opinions!

This Friday, July 15th, we have Dana-Marie Battaflia and her band on the Café Voltaire stage.  If that wasn’t awesome enough, Markus Michelucci and his band Sound Refuge will be joining them!  Please stop by for this absolutely free meeting of musical minds – it’s going to be an awesome, exciting event!

We have another author coming in for a visit on Saturday July 16th!  Author of the popular thriller Dead Witness, Joylene Newell Butler will be visiting Books & Co. from 3pm until 6pm for the launch of her new book Broken But Not Dead, a novel about a woman who must find the strength to confront a deranged stalker and all that he stands for in order to ensure her daughter’s safety.  Please come down and say hello to Ms. Butler – she would love to chat literature with you!

Looking for something fabulous to do on Thursday July 21st?  Look no further – The June Bugs, group of five women “whose singing voices blend like butter in two, three, four and five part harmonies. From upbeat gospels and saucy bluegrass to traditional folk and contemplative originals, their music reflects a shared passion for the pure, heart-piercing magic of acoustic music and the marvel of well-blended vocal harmonies.”  They’re going to rock the Artspace stage starting at 8pm!  Tickets are available now for $12 in advance and $15 at the door.  See you there!

And!?  Because we love you so much – Books & Co. is excited to announce the incarnation of a brand new book club!  The Nitty-Gritty Non-Fiction Book Club, brainchild of Bookies Erin and Asia, is as it sounds: a study of sometimes controversial, but always interesting non-fiction.  This club will be studying some of the best non-fiction to hit our shelves, starting with Jonathan Safran Foer’s Eating Animals (available in the shop now for $16.99).  The inaugural meeting will take place on Sunday August 28th from 3pm until 5pm in Café Voltaire.  If you have any questions, comments or concerns, please feel free to contact us via our handy-dandy Facebook page, through 140 fantastic characters (or less) on Twitter, telephonically ((250) 563-6637), or just stop on by!

That’s it for this week, folks!  Don’t forget to check us out on Facebook (we love your feedback), Twitter (140 characters or less) and on our fantastic homepage!

Have a great week!

July 6 – Upcoming Events Email!

Welcome to July!  We hope you all had a wonderful (and safe) Canada Day long weekend!

On this Friday, July 8th, at 8pm Smithers local James Hay will be taking the Café Voltaire stage!  Hay and his guitar have done it all – rock, metal, blues and classical!  Harnessing his vast experience, Hay has put together an impressive repertoire of original music!  Come down to the shop on Friday, grab a drink and loiter while you take in this fantastic musical act!

We have another author coming in for a visit on Saturday July 16th!  Author of the popular thriller Dead Witness, Joylene Nowell Butler will be visiting Books & Co. from 3pm until 6pm for the launch of her new book Broken But Not Dead, a novel about a woman who must find the strength to confront a deranged stalker and all that he stands for in order to ensure her daughter’s safety.  Please come down and say hello to Ms. Butler – she would love to chat literature with you!

Do you have a (fantastic) community group in need of more volunteers, or new avenues of exposure or awareness?  You’re in luck – our Events Planner and Coordinator Nicole has set up an awesome program for you!  Several times a month, Northern BC’s favourite indie bookshop will be inviting local organizations, groups, businesses and clubs up to the mic to show us who they are and what they’re all about!  Give Nicole a shout at the store, or email her at booksandcompanyevents@gmail.com if you’d like to schedule a “Community Talk,” or if you have questions, comments or input!

That’s it for this week, folks!  Don’t forget to check us out on Facebook (we love your feedback), Twitter (140 characters or less) and on our fantastic homepage!

May 16th – Upcoming Events Email!

Salut Prince George!

Stunning local songstress Dawn Boudreau is slated to grace the Café Voltaire stage this Friday (May 20th) at 8pm!  You know her, you love her, you must come down to the store and support our jazz/pop maestro!  As you know, this show is completely free of charge!

Another fabulous author will be making an appearance at Books & Co. on Thursday May 26th at 7pm!  UNBC alumnus, local poet and winner of the inaugural Barry McKinnon Chapbook Prize in 2006 Richard Krueger will be visiting Books & Co. to debut his new book The Monotony of Fatal Accidents!  Mark your calendars and we’ll see you there!

Books & Co.’s author month continues on Saturday May 28th when Dianna Holden visits with her book Daughter’s Choice!  Come down to the shop from 1-3pm to chat with Dianna about her passion and the subject of her book, “changing the Foster Care System as a whole. [Daughter’s Choice] tells the story of Holden’s childhood as one of Canada’s foster children and how she was victimized by her caregivers.”  This is an event you won’t want to miss – pencil Dianna in, folks!

Modern Celtic rock band out of the exquisite Okanagan Valley Cod Gone Wild will also be visiting on May 28th!  Come up to Artspace at 8pm and BE PREPARED to flip, flop, skip and jump . . . like a Cod Gone Wild!  Tickets are $20 each and available at the bookstore!

Are you confused about the delicate intricacies of Microsoft Office programs?  Are you dying to know what a hashtag is (and how to use one)?  Does it just kill you to know that you have no idea which wine pairs properly with which entrée?  If you have answered yes to any (or all) of these questions, or have your own personal curiosities that are eating away at you then May is your month!  May is “Dummies Month” and when you visit Books & Co. this month you will get your Dummies Guide books at 20% off!  This is the time to learn!

Now.  (Perhaps most importantly!)  Did you know that Books & Co. offers a children’s story time every Saturday morning at 10am?  We do!  Our lovely and amazing bookster Asia invites your wee gaffers into fantastic new worlds and teaches them about manners, how to hunt bears (swishy, swashy through long wavy grass) and the gastrointestinal problems faced by contemporary canines with the use of our favourite children’s books!  Bring the family in, and leave the kids in Asia’s care while you enjoy a coffee and a browse around the bookshop!

That’s it for this week, folks!  Don’t forget to check us out on Facebook (we love your feedback), Twitter and on our fantastic homepage!

Have an outstanding week!
