April Showers Bring May Flowers, and Events at Books & Co!

Well, since April showers bring May flowers, after the last couple of days we should be in for some lovely blossoms next week.  Even though National Poetry Month (to celebrate, why not pick up a fresh, recently released copy of Dirt of Ages by Northern BC poet Gillian Wigmore) is coming to a close, we’ve still got some hot events happening at Books & Co, Café Voltaire and ArtSpace!

On Thursday, April 26 we’ve got a real musical treat in ArtSpace! Maureen Washington will be here to give us an incredible jazz performance with Karel Roessigh, Joey Smith and Damian Graham. It’s going to be be a night to remember!  Tickets are only $25 and are available NOW.

Doug Koyama is going to be here for our Friday Night Mics this week!  Don’t miss his exciting show.  Things start at 8:00 pm in Café Voltaire on Friday, April 27.  As always, this event is free!

Did you know we’ve got a Spectacular Story Time Every Saturday Morning at 10:00 am! Our expert storytellers provide spice (and excellent scary, funny and weird voices) to classic and modern tales! So drop in with your youngsters and enjoy a coffee while they listen to stories and make crafts!

And on Saturday, April 28 at 5:00 pm the BC Book Prize Northern Tour stops in Books & Co for a reading featuring Charlotte Gill reading from Eating Dirt and Pamela Porter reading from I’ll Be Watching. Come out for a fantastic reading from some wonderful books!

ArtSpace is hosting a screening of award-winning documentary The Sludge Diet on Saturday, April 28! Come out and discover the truth about “Fertile Residual Material” (Biosolid Sludge) and why the idea of spreading it around Salmon Valley is so problematic!

Books & Company and Café Voltaire are really pleased to be hosting one of the events for the 3rd Viva Lo Caliente Festival!  On Monday, April 30 at 7:00 pm join members of the Latino Canadian Association of Northern BC for A Brief History of Latin America: How Exhumations bring Closure to the Victims of the Armed Conflict in Guatemala presented by Cristan M. Zuniga, International Liaison Coordinator of the Peruvian Forensic Anthropology Team! For more information about the other wonderful things happening during this week long public festival that celebrates Hispanic culture and traditions, visit http://www.latinpg.com! Don’t forget, Books & Co is selling tickets for the ¡Viva Lo Caliente! Latin Dinner & Dance Party presented by the Latino Canadian Association of Northern BC on May 5 (Tickets are only $40).

Join local author B. Heather Mantler for the launch of her latest novel For Wealth and Glory on Tuesday, May 1 at 7:00 pm in Café Voltaire.  For Wealth and Glory continues the story of Prince Proster, whose status as second son virtually guarantees he’ll never be king.  Instead of joining the church, he takes up arms, trains his friends and develops an elite private army that conquers a neighbouring kingdom, against the wishes of his father! Now he’s got everything he always wanted, except the acceptance of his father.

Thursday, May 3rd ArtSpace has got the wonderful Finnessee Trio!  Tickets are only $15 for this awesome acoustic event! Don’t miss out!

And a special treat for local history lovers of all ages, the launch of Mr. Huble Builds a House, the new children’s book to celebrate the centenary of the Huble Homestead.  Join us in ArtSpace on Sunday, May 6 at 3:00 pm for a reading from the book, a pioneer craft and loads of fun!

As always, Books & Co could be renamed Tickets & Co because we’ve got loads of tickets for fantastic events all over our fair city! We’ve got tickets for the Spring Showcase of Singers presented by Lyn Vernon on April 28 (tickets are $15 each), AbracaDAZZLE, Canada’s Favorite Magic Show, with John Kaplan on April 28 (tickets are $10 for both the matinee and the evening performances) and The Celtic Sessions featuring Out of Alba and the Prince George Youth Orchestra on Sunday, May 6!

We’ve also got tickets for Coldsnap’s cool night of music in May featuring Red Moon Road!  Make sure to mark your calendars for Monday, May 14th because this is a concert you won’t want to miss!  Tickets are on sale now (only $20)!

And don’t forget we’ve got tickets to the last Theatre Northwest Play of the season, Brighton Beach Memoirs, which runs from April 19 to May 6.  Come by soon before all of the good seats are taken on the night you want to go!

Upcoming Events at Books and Co and ArtSpace

There aren’t many days left until Christmas, and even fewer events are planned for Books & Company, Café Voltaire and ArtSpace.

This week’s Friday Night Mics, (on Friday, December 16 at 8:00 pm) is a real treat and features Country Singer and Guitarist Theresa Jordan.  Her original songs and covers are stylish and delightful.  As always this event is free.

Don’t forget to get a jump on Christmas with Out of Alba on December 17 in ArtSpace.  This festive Celtic concert starts at 7:30 and tickets are only $18.

On Friday, December 23 local favorite Mel McConaghy will be in to sign his brand new, hot off the press book My Life Through a Broken Windshield, a collection of truck driving tales from Canada’s wild and rugged British Columbia. If you’ve ever been a truck driver, or are thinking of making truck driving your profession, this book is a must read! Mel will be signing from 3:00 pm to 6:00 pm.

Books & Co, Cafe Voltaire and ArtSpace Weekly Update

There are only 17 shopping days until Christmas (including today), but don’t worry you can find something for everyone on your list at Books & Co! Come in and let our helpful booksters lead to you to the right gifts and stay for sandwich, soup or my personal favorite Candy Cane Hot Chocolate!

The Café Voltaire Holiday Goodies Trays are filled with fresh baked holiday treats certain to warm the heart.  They’re as fast and easy as a Costco tray, but they look and taste so much better! These freshly baked plates of holiday cheer are perfect for office parties and family get-togethers.  The trays come in a variety of sizes to suit any office or family event.  They are sure to bring a smile to even the grinchest Grinch! Drop in and pick up a menu right away!

There are still a very few tickets available for Books & Company’s very first Breakfast with Santa! On Sunday, December 11 at 8:00 am, Santa has fit us into his busy schedule for the first time this year and we want to make sure that all of the good little girls and boys who love stories get a chance to meet him! There will be a fantastic breakfast featuring French toast with berries and whipped cream, bacon and fruit salad and a Christmas story time and craft!  Santa’s excited and so are we! Tickets are only $10!

TONIGHT (Thursday, December 8) in ArtSpace is a wonderful Fundraiser and Spoken Word Event “Voice for Change” featuring a performance by story teller and stand-up poet K. Darcy Ingram and introducing CNC student & poet KT HawesAdmission is by donation and you are encouraged to bring gently used winter wear for CNC students.  All funds raised will be donated to the Northern Uganda Development Foundation!  Doors open at 7:00 pm and the show starts at 7:30!

This week’s Friday Night Mic is not to be missed as it features the fabulous songstress Dawn Boudreau together with Mr. Music Man Shawn Smith (sax, piano, guitar vocals) who will be performing songs of love and loss.  Expect a few minor chords… at tomorrow at 8:00 pm, Friday, December 9!

On Saturday, December 10 at 11:00 am we’ve got 2 local children’s book authors signing copies of their charming work.  Margaret Pascuzzo will be in to sign copies of her delightful Anton Series as well as A Sad Day in the Desert and Joey’s First Christmas.  And Coral Chen will also be in signing copies of her beautifully illustrated translated Chinese fables The Old Man Who Lost His Horse and When Winter Fades Away.  These are both excellent books for young readers on your list!

On Saturday, December 10th, from 7:00 to 9:00 pm at ArtSpace, you are invited by Amnesty International members in Prince George to celebrate International Human Rights Day and be part of the largest global human rights event of the year by commemorating the 63rd anniversary of the signing of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.  You will have the chance to support people whose human rights are being violated around the world by writing letters to those abusing folks and/or by signing greeting cards to folks being abused through Write for Rights.  We will also celebrate the 50th anniversary of Amnesty International with an anniversary cake.  Entertainment provided.  Please join us for a positive event! Doors open at 6:30 pm.

On Sunday, December 11 (Postponed from Saturday, December 3) we’ve got a signing of Zachary’s Gold by Quesnel author Stan Krumm at 11:00 am. Zachary’s Gold is a ripping yarn of old time Barkerville and the wild west conditions found in the goldfields of the 1860s.  This is a great book for the history lover, the historical fiction lover or the thriller lover on your list this Christmas.

Have you been putting off your Christmas Cards? Then maybe you should join the new Prince George Correspondents’ Club! The first meeting is scheduled for December 12 at 6:30 pm in Café Voltaire.  Come in and write to whomever you want about whatever you want and help us revive the lost art of letter writing.  Bring stationary (extra if you want to share or trade) and just write.  We’ll supply coffee for letter writers and stamps for letters to be mailed within Canada.  And it’s December so we suggest you write Christmas letters or bring in the kids to write Letters to Santa.

We’ve got a hot concert for a cold night.  Come to ArtSpace on Saturday, December 17 and celebrate a Celtic Christmas with Prince George’s very own Out of Alba!  This will be a concert to get the toes tapping and the blood flowing.  Tickets are only $18 and are on sale now.

And the tickets you’ve all be waiting for have arrived!  Coldsnap tickets are now available at Books & Co and they make the perfect gift for the music lover on your list!  Pick up a pair as a stocking stuffer (and then you get to go too) or buy a set for each concert and have a solid week of fantastic music to look forward to in the New Year!  Tickets to each concert are only $30.

And remember, if you’ve got a club, group or organization that needs a place to meet, Café Voltaire has the perfect atmosphere!
