September 28th Up Coming Events Email

GOOD MORNING PRINCE GEORGE!

So, things are humming at Books & Co, Café Voltaire and Artspace!

This evening, (Wednesday, September 28 at 7:00 pm), historian and storyteller Lloyd Jeck will be in to talk about his new book British Columbia Trails Heading North, which tells the tales of BC pioneers who traveled from across the globe to settle throughout the north.  Come in for the personal details that bring our history to life.

Friday, September 30 is a big one!  Andrew Nikiforuk and Charlotte Gill are going to be in Artspace at 7:30 pm to talk about their books Empire of the Beetle: How Human Folly and a Tiny Bug Are Killing North America’s Great Forests and Eating Dirt: Deep Forests, Big Timber and Life with the Tree-Planting Tribe and give us some insight into what happening in the forests around BC.  If you want to know what happened to all of the pine and spruce and why the bark beetles ran rampant through our forests, you will not want to miss this event!

Remember Nitty-Gritty Non-Fiction Book Clubbers: This month’s pick is Empire of the Beetle and we’ll be meeting an hour before the event starts to discuss the book and then head on up to Artspace to listen to Andrew Nikiforuk talk about the ideas we’ll have just been discussing!

And at 8:00 pm, in Café Voltaire, our Friday night just keeps getting better!  Raghu Lokanathan is back with his particular brand of musical genius!  Come in for a concert by a certified Prince George musical celebrity and enjoy his gritty, achingly beautiful songs.

Saturday, October 1st we’ve got another musical treat!  Kate Reid will be in Artspace at 8:00 pm for the CD Launch of Doing It For The Chicks.  Her often funny, sometimes tragic folk-roots music has earned her accolades from across the country and we’re excited she’s stopping by Artspace to share the launch of her fantastic new album with US!  You’ve still got time to pick up advance tickets for $12, and as always tickets will be available at the door ($15).

Monday, October 3 (at 7:00 pm) is the beginning of Prince George’s New Favorite Evening: Three Minutes and a Microphone: Literary Karaoke at Café Voltaire!  For the Café Voltaire debut of literary karaoke – a fantastic idea borrowed from the amazing Word Bookstore in Brooklyn, NY –  Books & Company and Café Voltaire invite you to share a portion of your favorite debut work!  It can be a particularly stirring passage from a novel, play, short story or poetry collection by an author who has international renown or is almost unknown. You’ve got 3 minutes, a mic and an audience to entertain! What Will You READ! For more information please contact Nicole at booksandcompanyevents@gmail.com or 250-653-6637

And last but certainly not least, Barbara Stewart¸ will be in Cafe Voltaire on Tuesday, October 4 at 7:00 pm, to read from and sign copies of her book, Campie.  What’s it like to be the lowest rung on the big oil ladder?  A view from the bottom of the oil barrel into work-camp culture, Campie is an entertaining, compelling account of how an ordinary person survives when things fall apart and there’s no “eat pray love” holiday to put them back together.

Stay tuned here for event info on events with Stan Chung (Global Citizen), and Wayne Johnston (A World Elsewhere, The Colony of Unrequited Dreams)!

Also, tickets are currently available for concerts with Valdy & Gary Fjellgaard (October 13) and Roy Forbes (October 21st)

That’s it for this week, folks!  Don’t forget to check us out on Facebook (we love your feedback), Twitter (140 characters or less), our blog and on our fantastic homepage!

July 27 – Upcoming Events Email!

Welcome to the end of July and (hopefully) beginning of some summer weather!

We have a pretty special treat for you on Thursday (July 28th), folks!  Grassroots and gypsy blues Queen Miss Quincy is going to be stopping by the Artspace stage on her way to Artswells!  She’ll be here at 8pm – be here, you will not want to miss this show!  Tickets are $10 each and are available at Books & Co.!

Alas, we are loathe to inform you that there will not be any music in Café Voltaire this Friday.  However!  In lieu of your regularly scheduled café concert, our fabulous Friday Night Mics host Eric Tompkins has booked the Artspace stage for a night of Navaz!  This Persian fusion group is always a treat, featuring the sufi singing of Neda Jalali with setar virtuoso Ali Razmi, and we highly recommend you stop on by!

On Sunday August 7th, from 2-4pm, we are hosting a special and super exciting event at Books & Co.!  To celebrate Winnie-the-Pooh’s 90th birthday we’re inviting all of you to come down for an afternoon of card making!  Once your greeting card masterpieces are complete our favourite Booksters will collect and send them to the New York Public Library, the home of the original Winnie-the-Pooh doll set, for the festivities later in the month (Pooh’s actual birthday is on August 21st)!  This is definitely something to attend with the family!  See you there!

Then, on Wednesday August 10th, we’re calling on all of our writers, wannabe-writers and anyone entertaining the thought of someday putting a pen to a piece of paper for any reason whatsoever to come down to Café Voltaire for a meeting with the members of the Federation of BC Writers for some fun and an introduction to the Federation!  This event will be hosted by PG darling Vivien Lougheed (FBCW’s Northern Representative), will feature an introduction to the Federation by FBCW President (the honourable) Craig Spence, and will be graced by readings from local legends Jacqueline Baldwin, Joylene Lowell Butler (who you may remember from this month’s author visit to Café Voltaire) and a host of other awesome homegrown talent!  Another amazing event you do not want to miss!

Books & Co. is also excited to announce the incarnation of a brandy new book club!  The Nitty-Gritty Non-Fiction Book Club, brainchild of Bookies Erin and Asia, is as it sounds: a study of sometimes controversial, but always interesting non-fiction.  This club will be studying some of the best non-fiction to hit our shelves, starting with Jonathan Safran Foer’s Eating Animals (available in the shop now for $16.99).  The inaugural meeting will take place on Sunday August 28th from 3pm until 5pm in Café Voltaire.  If you have any questions, comments or concerns, please feel free to contact us via our handy-dandy Facebook page, through 140 fantastic characters (or less) on Twitter, telephonically ((250) 563-6637), or just stop on by!

July 13 – Upcoming Events Email!

Well.  It really is July, though you’d never actually know it.  Here are some fantastic events to keep your mind off of the Fall-like Summer we’ve been “enjoying!”

You’ve been waiting so patiently friends and finally that time is upon us!  Café Scientifique returns to Café Voltaire tonight, Wednesday July 13th at 7:30pm!  Entitled Educating the Next Generation of Physicians this free event, featuring Dr. David Snadden – Vice Provost of Medicine at UNBC and Regional Associate Dean of Northern BC at UBC – will be an open forum informing you of the direction the UBC Faculty of Medicine would like to travel and, in turn, asking you to share your opinions!

This Friday, July 15th, we have Dana-Marie Battaflia and her band on the Café Voltaire stage.  If that wasn’t awesome enough, Markus Michelucci and his band Sound Refuge will be joining them!  Please stop by for this absolutely free meeting of musical minds – it’s going to be an awesome, exciting event!

We have another author coming in for a visit on Saturday July 16th!  Author of the popular thriller Dead Witness, Joylene Newell Butler will be visiting Books & Co. from 3pm until 6pm for the launch of her new book Broken But Not Dead, a novel about a woman who must find the strength to confront a deranged stalker and all that he stands for in order to ensure her daughter’s safety.  Please come down and say hello to Ms. Butler – she would love to chat literature with you!

Looking for something fabulous to do on Thursday July 21st?  Look no further – The June Bugs, group of five women “whose singing voices blend like butter in two, three, four and five part harmonies. From upbeat gospels and saucy bluegrass to traditional folk and contemplative originals, their music reflects a shared passion for the pure, heart-piercing magic of acoustic music and the marvel of well-blended vocal harmonies.”  They’re going to rock the Artspace stage starting at 8pm!  Tickets are available now for $12 in advance and $15 at the door.  See you there!

And!?  Because we love you so much – Books & Co. is excited to announce the incarnation of a brand new book club!
